 OUR MISSION

The Southeastern Connecticut Community Land Trust (SE CT CLT) is a membership-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that holds land for the development and stewardship of permanently affordable housing, land for food production, green space, and facilities for community organizations. SE CT CLT works to support access to affordable home ownership, advance community development, promote social justice, and further neighborhood revitalization across Southeastern Connecticut.

Why have a community land trust in Southeastern Connecticut?

A Community Land Trust is essential in Southeastern Connecticut because it offers a pathway to equity, long-term stability, and community-driven development in a region where many residents—particularly low-income and BIPOC families—have been historically excluded from quality housing and homeownership. For decades, local policies, redevelopment decisions, and market pressures have displaced entire neighborhoods, eroded generational wealth, and reduced access to secure, affordable homes.

A CLT provides a structural alternative: permanent affordability, community control of land, and protections against displacement. By holding land in trust for the public good and prioritizing resident leadership, a CLT helps reverse harmful patterns of inequitable development, strengthens neighborhood stability, and ensures that the benefits of investment and growth remain in the hands of the community itself.

In short, Southeastern Connecticut needs a Community Land Trust to restore what was lost, protect what is vulnerable, and build a more just, resilient future for all who live here.

The SE CT CLT  recognizes that Indigenous people have lived and cared for this region for thousands of years before the setters. Their understanding of land as a shared responsibility, supporting both human and non-human life, stands in contrast with the settler colonial concept of private property.

We acknowledge that the transformation of land into a commodity has brought wealth to some while causing deep harm, displacement, and loss to others. As a Community Land Trust, we hold title to land within this system and recognize the complexity of that responsibility.

We aim to move from extractive ownership models toward community-based stewardship, and we are committed to working respectfully and collaboratively with Indigenous partners to build a more just and sustainable future for land access in Southeastern Connecticut.
